Backpacker's Guide to Thailand; What to Pack?

I see a lot of backpackers here in my home city of Ayutthaya, many of them lugging backpacks which,I think must contain their whole wardrobe;doors, drawers, shelves and all! I think to myself why bring so much when everything is available to be purchased here in Thailand?
My advice is to bring enough clothes to take you through a couple of days.Remember that even though we are now in the "cool season" it's almost certainly hotter than your departure point,so T-shirts and shorts should suffice. However, if you have a late evening arrival you might need a light jumper.
But,I hear you say, that isn't going to last me my holiday.True,so here's what to do:your first evening jump in a taxi to go to the local evening market-Thai;tallat yen-where you'll find a good array of clothes best suited to the climate, and at reasonable prices.
On the market you can haggle over the price. Can't speak Thai?Take a piece of paper and a pencil with you. When you need to ask for a price say "tao rai?", how much?If you see a T-shirt,for example, you like marked up at 59Baht and that's your only intended purchase, don't haggle;you won't succeed. However,a couple of T-shirts and a pair of shorts, total, say 350Baht, offer 280 and you'll end up paying 300 or 320.there is no rip off in this, it's the way it's done.
Eventually you will need a larger backpack as you add to your purchases. No problem, they are here at good prices.
Finally,as the temperature at your departure point is likely to be chilly, change into more suitable clothing on the plane before your Bangkok arrival.
Good backpacking.
